"TUTBURY CRYSTAL GLASS LTD

March 2007: One of the oldest companies in Staffordshire is due to close its doors in April, despite having made strenuous efforts to make the company viable in a difficult environment for luxury goods.

After the sale of the old Tutbury Glass Works, near to Burton on Trent, the decision was made to relocate to Stoke on Trent in a bid to tap into the specialised market in the Potteries. Unfortunately, a difficult trading year has, nevertheless, forced the decision to close. Managing Director Ian Nicklin says, "We appreciated at the time the move to Stoke on Trent was a risk, but after spending nearly two years planning the reorganisation and relocation we felt it was worth taking the risk".

The closure has been forced due to the amount of imported goods flooding the market for hand crafted, luxury goods. This was further confirmed when the company lost the contact to supply the Queen's Awards for Industry in 2007 after 5 years. Mr Nicklin says, "We were very disappointed when we lost the contract to a cheaper, imported product".

The company had employed a lot of new initiatives when it moved to Stoke on Trent, such as the Montrose Corporate Range, which took off well initially.

The senior staff are all moving on to pursue new challenges and Moore Stephens based on Festival Park, have been asked to assist the company by placing it in voluntary liquidation. Staff remain hopeful that the historic name of Tutbury Crystal will be saved, even if it continues in a different format."
